한반도에는 희귀한 암석이 많다. 그러나 그 희귀성과 상품성 때문에 안타깝게도 대부분의 희귀 암석이 사라져 가고 있다. 대표적인 예가 여러가지 꽃무늬를 가진 꽃돌이다. 꽃돌은 화산암 중에서 구과상 유문암에 속하는 암석으로 국내에서는 경남 양산 원동, 경북 의성 금성산, 전남 영광 법성포, 전북 정읍 내장산, 전북 고창 등지에 분포돼 있다. 특히 경북 청송과 영덕 지역의 주왕산 국립공원 북쪽 산자락에서 산출되는 구과상 유문암은 무늬가 매우 크고 모양과 색상이 다양하고 아름답다. 그래서 이 지역의 꽃돌은 국내 수요의 90%를 공급할 뿐만 아니라 일본 중국에까지 알려져 있다. 따라서 중국과 일본에서도 꽃돌이 발견되지만 꽃돌 하면 한국을 생각하고 특히 청송 꽃돌을 연상하게 된다. 꽃돌 채취의 대상이 되는 구과상 유문암은 약 7000만년 전 지하에 있던 뜨거운 마그마가 퇴적암 속의 단열대를 따라 맥상으로 관입한 암맥이다. 꽃무늬 결정은 마그마가 심하게 냉각될 때 핵을 중심으로 방사상으로 생성된 것으로 크기가 수㎝에서 수십㎝로 매우 다양하다. 모양도 국화 해바라기 모란 장미 카네이션 채송화 등 10가지 이상의 다양한 꽃무늬를 나타낸다. 크기와 색상에 따라 더욱 더 세분할 수도 있다. 즉 국화석만 하더라도 형태와 색상에 따라 열 가지 이상이 있다. 구과상 유문암은 70년대부터 알려지기 시작해 90년대부터 본격적으로 개발되었다. 채석된 원석을 여러가지 형태로 연마해 국내외로 판매한다. 그러나 난개발로 인해 지금은 원석이 거의 고갈된 상태이다. 워낙 상품가치가 있기 때문에 귀중한 자연유산이 사라져 가고 있는 것이다. 자연문화재는 한번 망가지거나 고갈되면 영원히 재생할 수 없다. 더 이상 방치하지 말고 고갈되기 전에 보존방안을 강구해야 한다. 이대로 방치하면 머지 않아 형체조차 없어져 흔적과 기록으로만 남을 것이다. 당국은 희귀한 구과상 유문암에 대해 보존구역을 설정하고 천연기념물로 지정해야 한다. 그리고 지방자치단체는 지금까지 개발된 원석과 상품화한 꽃돌을 사들여 학습관이나 전...
